She walked to the edge of the yard, to her favorite spot that overlooked the beach. She could only see a triangle's worth, some moving dots, a glimmer of water, but that was enough. She could smell people in boots carrying buckets, bent over digging in the sand. Treasure hunting for bivalves.

Bet it smells good there, she thought. Earth, dampness, salt. She licked at the air, yes, she could almost taste it.
